Tart apples balance the sweet topping, while baking until the filling bubbles ensures the fruit juices thicken properly.
Ingredients
- 900 g apples, peeled and sliced
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 60 g caster sugar
- 1.5 tsp ground cinnamon
- 120 g rolled oats
- 100 g plain flour
- 100 g brown sugar
- 110 g cold butter, cubed
- 0.25 tsp salt
Step-by-step method
- Heat the oven to 190°C conventional or 170°C fan and lightly butter a baking dish.
- Toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, caster sugar and cinnamon, then spread them evenly in the dish.
- Mix oats, flour, brown sugar and salt in a bowl.
- Rub or cut the cold butter into the oat mixture until you have uneven crumbs with some pea-sized pieces.
- Scatter the crumble loosely over the apples without pressing it down.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes until the topping is golden and the apple juices are bubbling around the edges.
- Rest for 10 minutes before serving warm, allowing the filling to thicken slightly.
